Day 1 - Sussi and Chuma
On arrival at Livingstone Airport a Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma representative will meet and transfer you to the lodge. The transfer time is approximately 20 minutes. Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma is named after David Livingstone's faithful companions and consist of an intimate lodge and two exclusive houses, both of which are situated to make the most of the amazing views that the sweeping Zambezi River provides.
Your afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the activities on offer at Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma. Just a short drive away from the world famous Victoria Falls, the lodge offers guests a walking tour of The Falls, first described to Europe by explorer David Livingstone and known locally as the Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “the Smoke that Thunders”. During the wet season (April – May) the falls produce a constant roar and are accompanied by a cloud of brilliant spray where the mile wide Upper Zambezi falls 300 feet into the Lower Zambezi. Activities available from the lodge include game drives, sundowner cruises on the Zambezi, a tour of the falls and a village tour.
Livingstone is known as the adventure capital of Africa offering a variety of adrenalin activities. Imagine taking on the mighty Zambezi River on a white water rafting trip. Did you know the rapids on the Zambezi are officially defined as "Grade 5". The Flight of Angels offers an amazing opportunity to experience a flight in a helicopter and an unrivaled and superior view of the majestic Victoria Falls. Other adventure activities include bungee jumping, micro lighting over the Victoria Falls and swimming at the Devil’s Pool. These activities are an optional extra and can be booked at the lodge (depending on season).
Day 2 - Sussi and Chuma.
Your day is at leisure to enjoy the activities on offer. The area is well-known for its bird life, there are many fish eating raptors attracted to the rich pickings in the river.
The afternoon might be spent on the Zambezi River. A sundowner cruise is a great way to spend a few hours. Sanctuary’s boats are specially designed and the guide will take the boat through a series of grade 2 rapids before finding a spot to beach for a break or a sunset cocktail! The combinations of Zambezi spray on your face and delicious white wine (or other drink of your choice) on the tongue makes for a memorable afternoon sunset cruise, before drifting back to the lodge, where a warm shower and delicious dinner awaits.
Day 3 - Puku Ridge
A lodge representative will meet you in the reception area for your 20 minute transfer to Livingstone Airport. Depart Livingstone on a Proflight scheduled light aircraft charter flight via Lusaka to Mfuwe Airport. The flying time is approximately 1 hour to Lusaka and then another 1 hour flight from Lusaka to Mfuwe. On arrival at the airport a Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp representative will transfer you to the camp. The transfer time is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, mostly through the game rich South Luangwa National Park.
Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp is located in a remote wildlife rich area in the South Luangwa National Park and is named after the Puku antelope that inhabits the Kakumbi Dambo (floodplain), which the camp overlooks. This small and intimate tented bush camp is built on a hillside, combining an authentic safari experience under canvas with 5-star facilities and the wildlife that frequents the area.
The seven luxury tented rooms of the camp are spaced a good distance apart, with drop-down canvas flaps for impressive 180 degree views of the floodplain. The comfortably furnished rooms are equipped with twin or queen beds, mosquito nets and indoor and outdoor showers. The large oval bath also provides the perfect spot to relax and view the impressive wildlife in front of the tent. The private decked area, overlooking the small waterhole, is the perfect vantage point to sit and watch the African bush unfold.
Your afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the game viewing activity on offer at Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp. This includes both day and night game drives, using open 4X4 vehicles driven by our knowledgeable guides. Lions and leopards are often seen in the area around the camp, as are buffalo and elephant. For big game like this, guests really need a vehicle to get up close and here in the South Luangwa, travelers have the privilege of going on game drives at night. Driving through the National Park at night not knowing what the next nocturnal sighting will be offers a great sense of excitement and one can’t keep but wondering what is lurking behind the next bush! Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp also offers walking safaris for those who want a taste of the walking safari adventure that awaits at your next camp.
Day 4 - Puku Ridge
Your day is at leisure to enjoy the activities available. Guests are always amazed how much can be seen when they go down to the river for sundowner cocktails before leisurely driving back to camp. Bush babies in the trees stand out with their enormous eyes, puku and impala scarcely notice as vehicles pass by. Guests often see hyena and leopard in the early evenings and are able to get very close in our 4 x 4 vehicles. On the open plains below the camp there are always grazing herds of antelope and of course they attract the predators that every guest wants to see. Very often guests don't even have to leave the comfort of the main lounge area to see a leopard making a kill on the floodplain right in front of the camp...
Day 5 - Zebra Plains
After breakfast the camp managers will advise on your departure time for the half way meeting point at Ebony Groves where a Sanctuary Zebra Plains Camp representative will transfer you to our walking safari camp. The transfer is though the national park and forms part of a game drive where the driving time is approximately 2 hours to the meeting point and then another 1 hour 30 minutes to Sanctuary Zebra Plains. Guests are met by their Kapaso (traditionally this is what the person who looked after the Chief was called) under a beautiful shady tree where you walk the last 500 meters into camp, setting the mood for the next few days!
Sanctuary Zebra Plains is the first true luxury walking safari camp of its kind with just four traditional tents – two doubles and two twins. The camp accommodates a maximum of six guests, allowing for an intimate exploration of the untouched northern sector of the South Luangwa National Park. All tents have real beds, campaign furniture, mosquito nets, en suite facilities and flush toilets. Water for al fresco showers is mixed to your preferred temperature by your Kapaso.
The main mess tent has a dining area although most of the gourmet meals will be served in the open in carefully selected vantage points. There is also a small library and bar area. The camp has been designed to leave the lowest possible carbon footprint, only operating on solar power and can be packed up completely with no trace that it was ever there between seasons.
What sets the area apart is quite simply the concentration of wildlife. On the plains, zebra, antelope, buffalo and puku congregate alongside endemic species such as the Thornicroft's giraffe, the unique Crawshay's zebra and Cookson’s wildebeest. Predators such as lion, leopard and the elusive wild dog can be seen tracking their quarry whilst the rivers and tributaries are teeming with hippo, elephant and crocodile. A safari on foot also ensures that one can see many of the 400 species of birds found in the area and the rarely seen but fascinating “Little Five” (rhino beetle, buffalo weaver, elephant shrew, leopard tortoise and ant lion).
The day is at leisure to enjoy the afternoon walking safari on offer. Garth Hovell, widely regarded as one of Zambia’s most highly respected guides with almost twenty years of experience, personally leads walks twice a day. For Garth there is no match for the thrill of a walking safari: “On foot your senses are heightened by all that surrounds you to give you the ultimate safari high.”
Garth will tailor the walks according to the requests of guests. Today you might wander along a river bank, observing elephants before boating across the river to a large island opposite the camp to get up close to plains game before returning to camp for cocktails and canapés as the sun sets over the Luangwa River.
Day 6 - Zebra Plains
Anything is possible at Sanctuary Zebra Plains. Imagine standing in the giant footsteps of an elephant or touching the bark of a tree where only minutes earlier a leopard had scratched it. Imagine watching the grass spring back seconds after a Puku antelope bent it in passing, or spotting the tracks of a lion in the sand as it stalks its prey.
For the more adventurous there is always the possibility of tracking lions on foot! This is an adrenalin rush like no other as your inquisitive nature forces you to move forward, closer than most have been to a lion in the wild! All of this is obviously done with the utmost safety in mind as Garth and Matthews, your armed Zambian wildlife authority scout, are always close by.
Day 7 - Zebra Plains
This morning you may explore nearby Zebra Plains where buffalo, zebra and eland gather in large herds on the open savannah, a rarity in the wooded terrain of the South Luangwa.
Back at camp a scrumptious lunch will be waiting followed by a well deserved early afternoon siesta. Later in the afternoon you will meet in the main area for some tasty treats and tea or coffee - after which you will set off for your afternoon walking adventure. This afternoon your destination might be the Changwa Channel, featured in David Attenborough’s “Life” series and home to one of the highest concentrations of hippos on earth.
